Fibre provides the vital food for your baby’s gut microbiome – they literally munch up the fibre in your baby’s food, and produce special compounds called short chain fatty acids. These help to feed the cells that line your baby’s digestive system and keep their tummies and bowels nice and healthy.
These short chain fatty acids also help to balance the immune system, and influence how we use fat, sugar and make energy from our diet. They literally act as signals between our microbiome and our own cells. It’s an amazing communication system that has such importance for our health.
Quinoa is also a great source of phytochemicals – these are plant chemicals that give the grain their colour and help to provide an array of potential health benefits for humans. One group of phytonutrients found in quinoa are polyphenols, which also have a prebiotic (fertilising) effect, acting like a fertiliser to help support the healthy growth and development of your baby’s developing microbiome.
